Project B01

We explore the potential of combining spin-degrees of freedom in adsorbed molecules with strong substrate-induced spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for steering the magnetic properties of these hybrid systems, such as spin-anisotropies and non-collinear spin structures. Assemblies of atoms and molecules will be studied on substrates including metals, ferromagnets and topological insulators. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy will be employed, complemented by atomic force microscopy for geometry characterization. With computer simulations we will investigate how SOC manifests in experimental observables and if the transport-induced spin-orbit torque suffices for spin-switching.
